We knew former UFC fighter Ben Askren had been hospitalised with severe pneumonia last month, but it was still shocking to see this video update from the man himself explaining how he died four times and has absolutely no memory from May 28th to July 2.

He looks terrible, but thankfully, sounds a lot more lucid that you would expect:

What a warrior. Died four times and pulled through each time. Shout out to the doctors too, of course, but that is some record against the Grim Reaper right there. 4-0! Just needs to ride it out until the 5th and win on points, I guess?

Following Ben’s successful double lung transplant surgery, his wife Amy had said: “We are so thankful to share that Ben has received a double lung transplant.

“This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift. I’m hopeful that in coming weeks Ben will be able to give the next update, but hopefully he will wait until the drugs wear off.”

Not only has he given an update himself, but he’s perfectly coherent, has colour in his face, and looks like a man embarking on the comeback of a lifetime. Incredibly unlucky for an athlete as fit and healthy as Ben Askren to end up with severe pneumonia in the first place, but thank God he’s made it through to the other side. He may have come across like an insufferable pr1ck on a few occasions over the years, but no one deserves to go through something like this.
