A ‘Timesplitters 2’ Remake Looks Like It Could Be Out Soon

I might be going out on a limb here and be completely wrong about this, but when I was a kid I’m pretty sure that ‘Timesplitters 2’ was the first video game that featured a co-op mode where you could try and beat the levels with a mate and I remember it being completely and utterly solid as well, so it’s no real surprise that there’s going to be a remake of it when you take those two factors into account. That’s the trend these days isn’t it?

Well, it might be because it hasn’t actually been confirmed yet, but all the signs seem to be in the right places. It’s common knowledge that THQ Nordic purchased the rights to the series back in 2018 and seemed enthusiastic about a relaunch when Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz said the following:

We are hugely excited to have acquired TimeSplitters.

The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the TimeSplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill today’s gaming audience.

However, there hasn’t been any news on an upcoming edition of the series since then, although original co-director of ‘Timesplitters’ Steve Ellis was also hired to plot the future course of the franchise around the same time. YouTuber Beyond thinks he has found a reference to a ‘Timesplitters 2’ remake though in another THQ Nordic release called ‘SpellForce 3: Fallen God’. The game features references to several other THQ Nordic releases during its gameplay, and Beyond found an item from a vendor with a box labelled ‘Timesplitters 2 remake’ with the item description reading as follows: ‘It’s finally coming! The iconic shooter, which has stood the test of time to join the era of modern games.’

This could feasibly be a reference to an upcoming ‘TimeSplitters’ remake and with everything else going on it seems almost certain that one is on its way – we just need the release date now and to hope that it does the legacy of the great series proud. Unfortunately though literally just as I was writing this THQ Nordic have moved to distance themselves from rumours of a new Timesplitters game, with a spokesman saying the following:

This is just an innocent Easter egg.

The vendor in the game is a character known especially for not telling the truth.

What drips. I guess they could still be lying about this to make an eventual drop of the game even more exciting and dramatic, but I think I’m probably going to believe them this time. Hopefully someone sees the hype that this is generating though and finally gets on it.

For more of the same, check out this HD remake of Goldeneye. Incredible.
