The Worst Penalty Kick Run-Up Of All Time Just Took Place At The Women’s Euros

Incredible scenes at the Women’s Euros over the weekend as France were eliminated by Germany following the penalty shootout, which featured what some are calling the worst penalty kick run-up ever seen.

Lyon left-back Amel Majri tried something a little different as she geared up to take her penalty… and no one quite knows what to make of it:

Now obviously if that had found the back of the net everyone would be calling Majri a genius for her unorthodox penalty-taking technique, but sadly, that was not the case and so instead it’s just utterly baffling. A long run-up where she lost all speed and momentum by the time she reached the ball, and clearly telegraphed which direction she was kicking in. It seems like something you’d try with your mates just for a laugh?

I guess she must feel there’s a benefit derived from taking a penalty that way, it’s just no one seems to be able to figure out what that benefit might be. Maybe she was banking on the keeper diving early? That would explain why she slowed down so much before kicking the ball. Still, why the curved run? Leave that to the high-jumpers, I reckon.
