Earlier this year, Stormzy caught a lot of flak for deleting his pro Palestine posts from social media, and then immediately coming out with an advert for McDonald’s promoting the brand new ‘Stormzy Meal’, which features the UK rapper’s favourite items.
Here’s the (since-deleted) Pro Palestine post:
And the Stormzy meal that followed:
Naturally a lot of people were very disappointed in Stormzy (including his old pal Jeremy Corbyn) for collaborating with a company that sent free meals to IDF soldiers in Gaza. Stormzy dug an even deeper hole for himself by releasing a statement defending his decision to collaborate with McDonald’s, and since then there’s basically been radio silence from the guy.
This week, Stormzy released a new track called ‘Sorry Rach’ in which he references the McDonald’s backlash with the following lyrics:
I heard they wanna hang me out to dry for a nugget meal/ The world might never love your boy again but my mother will.”
So why is the track called ‘Sorry Rach’? Well, Rachel is apparently the name of his manager, and I guess she won’t like some of the things he’s saying in this track. Although I suppose he doesn’t really have much choice but to embrace his villain status since none of his fans want to forgive him over the whole McDonald’s thing. After all, no one’s perfect, are they?
How much will this actually influence Stormzy’s record/ticket sales going forward though? Are his fans really going to hold the Maccies advert against him forever if he releases an absolute banger of an album this year? I guess we will have to wait and see.
