The apocalypse is always one of televisions’s favourite subjects, with shows like ‘The Last Of Us’ and ‘The Walking Dead’ regularly doing big numbers, but I don’t think anyone out there has ever thought that gigantic super pigs would be the threat that finally wipes humanity off the face of the Earth. Zombies are much more credible, right?

However, the reality of the situation apparently looks very different though as Dr Ryan Brook – who leads the University of Saskatchewan’s Canadian Wild Pig Research Project – reckons that 45 pound super pigs boast the biggest threat to humanity out of anything ever. These pigs were originally bred by farmers to help meet high demand for boar meat back in the 1990s, but due to a lack of appetite for the meat since the early 00s have now been left to roam the plains to their own devices, regularly wreaking havoc on crops, natural environments and water quality.

Here’s what he had to say about them:

Wild hogs feed on anything.

They gobble up tons and tons of goslings and ducklings in the spring.

They can take down a whitetail deer, even an adult.

These animals are very well adapted.

They have an incredibly thick coat of hair and fur and that gives them a massive benefit to survival.

A 638lb pig is going to do a lot better out in the cold than an 80lb pig by a long shot.

The disease side turns my hair grey.

There’s a long shopping list of what pigs can get and because we know from tracking them we know they travel very large distances.

They could easily spread these diseases to humans and it could be a very big problem.

Yeah I’m not sure how anything he’s saying there makes these guys a bigger threat to humanity than anything else out there? Off the top of my head, surely the recent COVID-19 pandemic was a bigger issue? Or Putin’s war with Ukraine or some of the terrorist cells out there? Or even that zombie fungus from ‘The Last Of Us’ that is apparently real?

Sounds to me like this guy just absolutely loves these giant pigs – I mean he’s spent his whole life studying them hasn’t he? – and is just trying to get everyone else to pay attention to them by coming up with a sensationalist headline. Not convinced myself, but if you want to bring it up with everyone over the weekend as a conversation topic be my guest. See how that goes for you.

For more of the same, check out this giant pig in blanket with 16 metres of bacon. That’s more my kind of pig.
