Elizabeth Thomas was only 15 when she was kidnapped by her married former teacher Tad Cummins. Once the pair went missing, a huge manhunt was launched in Tennessee, US, before they were eventually found thousands of miles away in California in April.
Cummins – who is a self-confessed ‘Jesus freak’ – left a note for his wife telling her that he was going away to clear his head. He made no mention of Elizabeth, who the couple had both taken to church.
When the couple fled, Cummins threw both of their phones in a river and bought hair dye to change Elizabeth’s appearance. Meanwhile the schoolgirl updated her Instagram with the word ‘wife’ in her bio alongside a ring emoji.
Police eventually tracked the couple down after a sighting showed the pair buying condoms in Walmart. Grim. They were discovered hiding in a rural cabin and Cummins soon admitted to the police that he’d had sex with Elizabeth and was arrested.
Up until now Elizabeth hasn’t spoken about the ordeal since she was returned by the police, but a reporter for local newspaper Colombia Daily Herald managed to track her down and she agreed to speak:
I don’t regret it, nor do I say it was the right thing to do.
It was an experience I’ll have to live with the rest of my life. It’s good and bad.
It’s there. No matter what we do, we’ll have to deal with it.
She added that she’s found it upsetting that people keep “asking things that are too personal” about the case.
Everyone just needs to calm down. I am a human being. I can answer things fairly.
People are talking to me like they know me.
They didn’t talk to me before. They didn’t try to know me before. They have only liked me since I came back.
Yeah, they didn’t talk to you before because you hadn’t run away with a 51-year-old teacher. Not to justify people hounding her for personal details, it’s just it should be obvious why people are interested. I would rather just know what possessed her to run away with a guy like that and vice versa. There’s no justification to Cummins running off with a girl of that age. Yes, there can be age differences when it comes to love, but not when the girl is that young. It’s just plain wrong.
