Polkadot

This young chap, although only 18, has started leaving his mark on the scene with an already impressive track output. Sam Bevan aka Polkadot, from Wolverhampton, had his first E.P ‘Don’t Pigeonhole Anything’ released on 97 SIDES back in June 2012 (free download here) and since then has furthered his production style. With a few Radio 1 plays under his belt he is definitely an artist to watch out for this year.

The first tune I want to look at is the production that first brought Polkadot into view, which is his single released on Kerri Chandler’s MadTech Records – ‘Wasn’t Like That’. The soothing sharp synths, acutely layered and built up with the catchy vocals make this song. The second break really impressed me, you can tell that the production is top-notch. The fact that Polkadot is only 18 and making music this good means he will be taken seriously as an artist, not just another kid who makes ‘good beats’ in his bedroom while wanking over a Disclosure poster.

The second track I want to talk about is Polkadot’s remix of Amerie – One Thing, a track that we all remember for being overly commercial and a bit rubbish (we all liked it really). The track has been remixed a few times before, but Polkadot beats ’em all with this heavy production. It got dropped at a night near me last week and the whole place went off, vibes all over the place. The chopped vocal samples and deep bouncy synths really make this track stand out. The house claps and kicks shuddering in the background add depth and close the case on a great remix.

The third and final track I want to mention is Polkadot’s new remix of fellow MadTech troopers AZ & TOR – ‘Resend’. This production shoots short and sharp deep synths over virtual untouched vocals make this a simple but BIG remix. The final break offers building synths submerged in claps and echoed vocals leading to a delectable drop.

From these three tracks you can see this kid has talent. I’ve got a feeling that Polkadot will be releasing an E.P on MadTech later on this year, he has been heavily involved with the label recently and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was to release something massive. Check his Soundcloud for more loveliness.
