I think I quite like a couple of David Mamet plays/movies – you know ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’, ‘Wag The Dog’, ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’ – but I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to stop that now after he aired his awkward views about male teachers, claiming that they’re all pretty much paedophiles.

The ‘wonderful’ state of Florida has recently passed a new law known the ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill’ which won’t allow sexual orientation or gender to be taught to children under ten years old. I don’t really want to get into whether or not I think that’s a good idea, but for some reason when Mamet was interviewed about it on Fox News (where else?) he decided to reveal his problematic views about male teachers.

Here’s what he had to say:

We have to take back control.

If there’s no community control of the schools, what we have is kids being not only indoctrinated but groomed in a very real sense by people who are, whether they know it or not, sexual predators.

Are they abusing the kids physically? No, I don’t think so. But they’re abusing them mentally and using sex to do so.

This has always been the problem with education. Teachers are inclined, particularly men because men are predators, to paedophilia.

People have gone nuts and people are frightened because there’s huge changes in society, that are brought about by the people in power.

The people in power, as always, are to a large extent, parasites who are feeding off of the decaying flesh.

Whilst some of what he says might have some merit (I say that very loosely), I think he kind of loses all credibility when he says that all teachers are inclined to paedophilia. There are literally so many male teachers all over the world that can disprove that without even doing anything. Such a bizarre, baseless comment to make that is going to set any debate on these issues back a couple of years. Moron.

For more of the same, check out 21 great film that you’ve never heard of. Couple of David Mamet ones in there – should maybe get rid of them because of this though.
