A top-ranking North Korean diplomat Thae Yong-Ho has promised to expose the “gruesome realities” of life under Kim-Jong-un’s repressive ruling in his first public appearance since deflecting the country earlier this year.

Yesterday Thae vowed to devote himself to exposing the cruelties of the Pyongyang regime while encouraging others to escape. South Korean lawmakers who met with Thae in Seoul told the Yonhap news agency that he had planned his reasons for defecting and shown the “capitalist” survival techniques of ordinary North Koreans.

Thae was previously living in London but working as the deputy ambassador to Britain when he escaped to South Korea with his wife and two sons in August. He is now the highest ranking diplomat to ever have deflected.

The North has denounced him as “human scum” and accused him of various crimes including stealing state funds, spying for South Korea and even raping a minor. Jesus, bitter much? Thae has already proved that none of these accusations are true to South Korean lawmakers and has now promised to devote his life to:

Freeing the North Korean people from repression and persecution.

I will engage in public activities even if it threatens my own safety.

Apparently Kim Jong-un’s paranoia and spy techniques are even more severe than we thought. He said that for high-level officials in North Korea, life was extremely insecure and it was perfectly normal for their homes to be bugged and monitored for any hint of disloyalty. That sounds eerily close to the idea of Big Brother in George Orwell’s ‘1984’.

On the plus side of all of this, following Thae’s arrival and several other high-profile defection cases, South Korean President Park Geun-Hye told her government in October to prepare for a large-scale influx of North Koreans. Hopefully this will be the start of a revolution in that country – it’s about bloody time. Kim Jong-un’s tyrannical dictatorship needs to be stopped for good.
