Survival horror video games are undoubtedly some of the best and most enjoyable out there, so it’s great to hear that a new release is so brutal and gory that it’s actually been banned in Japan.

Sure, Japan has much stricter censorship issues in video games over here in the west, but even so that’s still a pretty awesome accolade for the game to receive. I’m interested.

‘The Callisto Protocol’ tells the story of Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security facility located on Jupiter’s moon Callisto that seems to get taken over by zombie aliens. Take a look at the trailer below and see what you think, alongside a statement from developer Striking Distance:

As of now, the CERO rating cannot be passed.

We have decided that we would no longer be able to provide you with the experience you need.

We hope everyone in Japan will understand. If you have already pre-ordered, we will refund you.

Looks pretty awesome doesn’t it? It’s immediately gone straight to the top of my Christmas list without even ever having heard of it before this.

Can’t wait to see all the ways that my character ends up dying and from what I’ve been reading it’s actually really hard, so I’ll probably be seeing those brutal death animations all the time. So glad I’m not Japanese.

For more of the same, remember the Night Terrors video game for your smart phone? That was super scary as well.
