The Madeleine McCann case has been at the forefront of the news for the past fifteen years and it was thought that a breakthrough was made two years ago when police finally identified German burglar, paedophile and rapist Christian Bruckner as a main suspect.

However, since that time police are still yet to charge Bruckner and tonight a new documentary on Channel 5 seeks to ask the question as to why this is. Presented by former detective turned investigative journalist Mark Williams-Thomas, the documentary looks into Bruckner’s past and tries to piece together what he was doing in the days leading up to McCann’s disappearance.

Here’s what Williams-Thomas had to say about the show:

Just days after Madeleine was abducted, I was on the ground reporting, and I’ve been trying to solve the case ever since.

In 2020 came the biggest breakthrough in 20 years: German authorities announced they had a prime suspect. He is Christian B, a sex offender, paedophile and burglar.

But two years on, police have not yet charged him. I’ll be testing their evidence, uncovering new witnesses, pursuing a meeting with the prime suspect himself, to find out if this man is the missing link in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

I can’t quite believe what I’ve been told – that on the night of Madeleine’s appearance, Christian B was with a woman outside of Praia De Luz and spent the night with her.

And if that’s true, he can’t be involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

I now need to find this woman as quickly as possible, and get her to give me her account.

That does sound and look like it’s going to be pretty exciting, doesn’t it? I doubt that by the end of it we’ll have any real answers though. Williams-Thomas has been trying to solve the case for 15 years FFS and doesn’t seem to have made much progress. Probably won’t ever find out the truth sadly, but I’m sure theories will continue to be thrown out until the day I die. We probably still won’t be able to get enough of them either.
