Back in the old days when MTV actually showed music most of the time, there was a notable exception with the excellent claymation fighting show Celebrity Deathmatch in which random celebrities who had beef would battle it out to the death in bizarre wrestling deathmatches commentated on by Stone Cold Steve Austin.

I’m sure you already knew that if you clicked on this article though and didn’t need me to explain that to you. If you didn’t then yeah, it really is as bizarre as it sounds but it was also hilarious and it’s kind of surprising that MTV haven’t done anything with it for nigh on twenty years.

Finally, someone has seen sense though and decided to pick it back up, with Chris McCarthy – the president of VH1, MTV and CMT – saying the following:

We’re excited to grow our partnership with Ice Cube and Cube Vision to reimagine this fan favorite.

Deathmatch was the meme before memes, remains a hot topic on social media and will be a smart, funny way to tackle the over-the-top rhetoric of today’s pop culture where it belongs – in the wrestling ring.

I mean I’ve got high hopes for this but I’m not sure if it’s ever going to be able to top the original because you can see half the celebrities and fans these days just getting so offended by it that they would end up suing it or boycotting it if it did something controversial. Hopefully it was retain that cutting edge, but in 2019 I’m just not sure it’s going to be able to keep that level of cutting satire going. Fingers crossed though.
