‘Morbius’ Director Has Hilariously Blunt Response To All The Film’s Bad Reviews

I read a VICE article yesterday that did a very good job of summing up the phenomenon surrounding ‘Morbius’, in that it seems like everyone sort of thought the movie was going to be shit way way before it was released and even despite the fact that it’s been memed to oblivion in the last few days and all the reviews have been terrible, it’s still managed to take $40 million at the box office and effectively kill it. Not sure what the moral of the story is but I guess you sort of have to respect that? Or that there’s no such thing as bad publicity? Something like that?

Anyway, the director of ‘Morbius’ is a guy named Daniel Espinosa who has also made movies like ‘Safe House’ and ‘Life’ (can’t say I’ve seen either of them, but I suppose they’re more legit than ‘Morbius’) and he had a pretty hilarious response when asked point blank about the bad reviews the movie had been receiving when talking to ‘Insider’. Here’s what he had to say:

When I did my first feature it was a small movie called ‘Babylon Disease’.

I remember one day going home on the subway and I had a few drinks so I was a bit drunk.

Someone nudged me on the train and said, ‘I have to tell you what’s wrong with the second scene in your feature,’ and I was like, ‘Well, okay.’

The point I’m making is that it’s a strange thing to make something that is so public.

Look, I have a lot of self-hatred so I have a lot of criticism of my own work.

I always trying to focus on being better.

But I am also proud of what I do.

There are parts in all of my movies that I’m really proud of.

I mean that is kinda normal isn’t it? To criticise your own work? I don’t think anybody looks at anything they’ve done and thinks it’s consistently 10/10 amazing, especially after some self reflection on it. I guess it does kind of suck when you don’t even really get to do that because everyone is already saying your movie completely blows. Sounds like he’s kind of used to it already though thanks to his own mind.

Feel bad for the guy that he walks around all the time hating on himself. Those reviews and memes can’t have done his self esteem too much good either, the poor guy. Maybe he shouldn’t put himself out there making dumb movies like ‘Morbius’ though as I doubt it’s going to help his life outlook much.

I still haven’t seen ‘Morbius’ myself (I know what am I playing at), but I’m very interested to see what parts Espinosa is really proud of because by all accounts it seems to be one of the most terrible movies ever made. Hopefully he spills the beans on that in the near future and and we’ll all get a few more laughs about that as well.

If you can’t laugh, you cry and I guess Espinosa must be coming somewhere in the middle of that right now. Good luck to him as it feels like this is only the beginning.

For more of the same, check out ‘Morbius’ star Tyrese being fooled by a Morbius meme about Martin Scorsese. That was a really good one.
