Even though it came out almost twenty years ago, The Matrix is still one of the most iconic movie franchises of all time, but I don’t think any of us thought that the world would ever be revisited – but we were wrong.

It was announced last night that both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would be returning for the fourth instalment of the series, alongside original director Lana Wachowski, who will write and direct the new movie. It is not known if Laurence Fishburne will be back yet, but there are rumours that his character will be played by a younger actor.

Here’s how the news broke with Warner Bros Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich telling Variety the following:

We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana.

Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.

Sounds pretty definitive. ‘New Chapter’ also implies that this could be the beginning of a whole new set of movies in The Matrix universe as well, which could also be completely sick.

Lana herself was suitably gushing about the return of her most famous work, saying the following:

Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.

Sounds like everything is in place for it to be another smasher. Filming is set to begin at the start of 2020, so I guess we’ll probably see it summer 2021. Catch you then.
