Not sure what you guys do when you’re bored – maybe play a bit of FIFA? Go to the cinema? – but I guarantee it’s not the same as 49 year old Daniel Emlyn-Jones, who decided to plant the world’s most dangerous plant in his garden to alleviate his apathy.

The gympie gympie is a plant that can deliver a sting so powerful that it can conjure up suicidal thoughts, as it can leave the victim in major pain for weeks or even months, but Emlyn-Jones still thought that it would be a wonderful addition to his garden in Oxford. He keeps the plant in his front room in a cage with a signpost saying ‘danger’ to warns guests of the potential peril of getting too close.

Here’s what he had to say about the decision:

I just thought it would add a bit of drama to my gardening. You can get seeds on the internet, you have to be careful it doesn’t spread out of a contained area though, so I keep it potted in my front room.

I got my seeds from a company in Australia, it cost something like sixty Australian dollars, so it wasn’t cheap.

I have always liked plants though, I just have got a bit bored with geraniums.

According to the internet, the Aborigines supposedly used it to help treat arthritis. I’m not sure how true that is, or how that would work.

If you grasp it, it’s probably not a good idea, but I’ve been slightly stung by it through the fabric bit on the back of my heavy duty elbow length gloves and that wasn’t awful.

I’ve got 3% hydrochloric acid which you can soak the area with for 15 minutes to lessen the sting. It was very slight – it didn’t really bother me much to be honest.

I do keep the cage locked though, and I keep the leaves away from the bars as if someone came too close and brushed against it that’d be quite risky.

Geez – this guy sounds like an absolute melt doesn’t he? ‘Oooh I’ll get the world’s most dangerous plant in my front room but then keep it in a cage, but actually it stung me and didn’t bother me at all because I’m so hard. I’ll also sell my story to the newspaper because I’m so kooky and outlandish and dangerous.’

Give me a break. This guy is a complete loser and a liar who 100% never got anywhere near the plant after he put it in the cage. He probably pays a gardener to water it for him.

I think if you’re gonna get the world’s most dangerous plant in your house at least have it out there and not locked away in a cage so it actually gives some semblance of danger to yourself and your visitors. Although I’m fairly certain nobody is coming to his house to check it out as he clearly doesn’t have any mates either. Weirdo. Enjoy your weird relationship with your plant!
