It’s the eternal debate that no football fans will ever agree on – just who is the Greatest Of All Time: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

Whilst many people are happy to argue about this until the cows come home, it probably isn’t going to actively affect anyone’s marriage or friendship, is it? I mean it’s just a goddamn opinion, right?

Wrong. Over in Russia, a marriage has ended in divorce thanks to the fact that the husband rates Lionel Messi and the wife is more of a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo. The pair – known as Arsen and Lyudmila – are from the the city of Chelyabinsk in the Urals and things came to a head when Argentina defeated Nigeria in the last minute last week.

Arsen explained what happened:

I actually met Lyudmila at a bar during a game in the 2002 World Cup.

However, since the beginning of the World Cup, she mocked Messi and said he couldn’t even score a penalty against Iceland.

I could not contain myself and told her what I thought about the vain Ronaldo, the Portuguese national team and all the clubs she likes.

Then I took my belongings and left her forever.

Bit harsh mate but I suppose most people generally fall into either the Messi or Ronaldo camps don’t they? Usually you can just get past this though and it isn’t such a big deal. I guess World Cups just get people that little bit extra riled up though, don’t they?
