Remember when all those paranoid parents tried convincing us that video games can have a bad effect on our children’s brains? Well, most of those kids have grown up now, and speaking for the majority, we ended up pretty OK. However, there are always outliers.

An 11-year-old was caught driving on an Ontario, Canada highway after playing a heavy session of ‘Grand Theft Auto’. The events were detailed in a video by Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of OPP’s Highway Safety Division posted on the department’s Twitter page. Check the link below and skip to 00:45 for all the gossip.

In the video, Schimdt claimed to have received calls around 11pm Saturday about an impaired driver who was swerving all over the roads. It wasn’t long before an OPP officer found and attempted to pull the driver over. Schmidt said:

The vehicle was first… going under the speed limit – like about half the speed limit.

As the officer tried to get out and talk to this driver, find out what was going on… the vehicle took off again.

The officer was apparently unable to get a clear view, before the kid managed to hit speeds of 75mph in a highway getaway. Eventually, the OPP boxed the vehicle and brought it to a rolling stop.

You can imagine the look on their faces when they realised it was an 11-year-old.

(He) had just been finishing playing Grand Theft Auto at home and wanted to find out what it was like driving a car.

Fortunately, no one was harmed and the child was returned home by police. No charges have been laid.

It appears the debate on video-games and a person’s health is still ongoing, and with the gaming industry being more popular than ever, it’s safe to say we have only learnt that kid is hardcore. Go back to childproofing your home Susan, you didn’t win this one.
