Kanye West seems to have been kinda quiet – by his standards at least – in recent weeks after that weird episode where he said he was running for President and held a very strange rally in South Carolina, but he’s back with a vengeance today having tweeted at least 100 times already about topics like his record contracts, the bible and a conspiracy theory that Michael Jackson and Prince were murdered.

For those of you that don’t know, Kanye recently described himself as the new Moses as he attempted to buy back the master recordings from the record labels that have released them in the past. Most recording artists don’t own the masters, meaning that the label takes a huge chunk of the profit that they should be entitled to, so what Kanye is trying to do here is essentially a really good thing, but I’m not sure if mouthing off on Twitter is the way to go about it.

Anyway, the important link here is that Kanye thinks that Michael Jackson and Prince were killed because they owned the masters to their records. Here’s how he breaks it down:

I mean everything he’s saying there about record labels exploiting artists is pretty much common knowledge I think so it’s not really that surprising and he willingly signed this contract in the first place, so I’m not really sure what he’s complaining about? Yeah, the system sucks but I don’t think there’s really any way around it, although fair play to Kanye for trying to sort it out. I expect he’ll forget about this in a couple of days though and just go on some other crazy crusade.

As for Prince and Michael Jackson being murdered because they own their masters, well that’s certainly an interesting theory,  but I guess it requires you to look at record labels as some kind of mafia organisation that actively murders people who don’t agree with them. Whilst I agree that record labels definitely do take advantage of the little guy and could be comparable to the mafia in that respect, I think they probably draw the line at actually murdering humongous superstars.

Maybe I’m wrong though and this is how they’ve been doing it all these years? Everyone knows record sales soar when someone dies, although if the labels don’t own the masters then I’m not sure if their deaths would even benefit them as the money would probably go to their estates? I guess it stops other artists getting similar ideas, but it seems a bit much right? Answer me that one Kanye.
