Everyone has the problem multiple times a day when they feel a fart brewing and they just don’t know what to do about it – let it rip or hold it in?

It’s an age old question that is probably most determined by just where you are and what you’re doing, but it’s safe to say that the vast majority of the time we just hold them in and let all that flatulence travel back up our ass to wherever it came from. Turns out that this might be really really bad for you though, as this practice could lead to them coming out of your mouth. Rough.

Clare Collins – a professor of nutrition and dietetics at New South Wales University, Australia – explains why:

Fart

The next time you feel a large volume of intestinal gas getting ready to do what it does, try to move to a more convenient location.

Whether you make it there or not, the best thing for your digestive health is to just let it go.

A build-up of intestinal gas can trigger abdominal distension, with some gas reabsorbed into the circulation and exhaled in your breath.

Holding on too long means the build-up of intestinal gas will eventually escape via an uncontrollable fart.

So there you have it – don’t really like the idea of farting out of my mouth or letting off an uncontrollable fart so there’s pretty much no other option but to spend the rest of my life farting whenever I please. And I quote Clare Collins whenever anyone calls me up on it and get away scott free. I suggest you do the same.

For more farting, check out this guy who documented his farts at work for six months. What an inspiration.
