5) What’s The Beef With The Pound?

Scotland Independence Guide - flag runner

Scotland wants to keep the pound, it’s stable and taken seriously globally. The SNP, the Scottish Green Party and many other Scottish bodies want full independence from the UK, but still want to keep our currency. The Conservatives, Labour and the Lib Dems are basically saying “well, if you don’t want to play with us we’re taking our football home”.

I kind of side with that argument really, if you really do want to leave the safe harbour of UK politics and finances you can’t expect to keep the bits you like. Moving to another currency is very expensive, not least because you have to design, print and distribute the new version of cash. The UK are using this argument as a thumb screw and the SNP leadership are busying themselves arguing why it would be good for the UK to let them keep it.

All told, economies are such a complex and convoluted beast that it’s difficult to predict what would happen for better or worse if they did keep or lose the pound. It might be an interesting experiment?

Their other option is the Euro but the SNP, being independent types, have said there’s no chance of that. But the EU has said that if Scotland, as a new country, wants to be in the EU it will have to take on the Euro, otherwise it can’t come in. Rock and a hard place.

6) What About Shared Debts

Scotland Independence Guide - salmond

Initially it was agreed that the UK and Scotland would split their debts in a fair way. That was until the pound argument got started. Salmond is now basically saying “well, if we can’t have the pound we’re not going to pay any debts”. That doesn’t seem very fair does it?
