The Gremlins movies are fondly remembered due to the fact they’re kinda cute but also extremely violent and disturbing, in the kind of way that you don’t really think that they would be able to be made in today’s climate.

People are always talking about a third instalment and it turns out that we’re finally going to get our wish some 30 years after The New Batch was released. Well, kinda as WarnerMedia have revealed that they’ve ordered a ten episode run of an animated sequel entitled ‘Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai’ for their new streaming platform.

Whilst it’s going to be a cartoon, it’s said that the series will be ‘adult focussed’, however it’s the content of the show that sounds a bit more concerning as it’s going to be a major departure from the movies. Here’s what Joe.ie had to say about the plot:

The show will be set in Shanghai in the 1920s and reveals the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 feature film) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.

Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering and sometimes battling colourful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.

On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

I mean that sounds OK but also kinda lame really doesn’t it? Kinda sounds like it’s gonna be all cutesy cutesy and even with the ‘adult focus’ sounds more like something you might watch on Saturday morning with your kids. Will reserve judgment until I see it, but not too hyped on it right now.
