Back in the day – and I guess we’re going back quite a bit here right now – Goldeneye 64 and Mario 64 were two of the best loved games out there, but I don’t think that anyone ever contemplated a crazy mashup of the two.

Until now that is. Some guy with way too much time on his hands spent four months coding to create a full version of the game with Super Mario Bros characters patched in as all the main characters. Apparently this was his childhood dream, so I guess fair play for going out and realising it.

You can check out a trailer to it below and to be fair it does look kind of funny. There’s also a list of all the character swaps which justifies exactly why each one has been chosen which is kind of interesting if you’re a complete Nintendo geek:

James Bond – Mario

Natayla Simonova – Peach

Alec Trevelyan – Luigi

Xenia Onnatop – Daisy

Arkady Ourumov – Bowser

Boris Grishenko – Yoshi

Dimitri Mishkin – Donkey Kong

Valentin Zukovsky – Wario

May Day – Pauline

Oddjob – Toad

Jaws – Waluigi

Baron Samedi – Rainbow Bowser, the Powered-Up version of Bowser from Super Mario 64.

Soldiers/Civilians/Scients – Koopa Troopas

Mishkin/Donkey Kong is no longer the Defense Minister, that role now goes to May Day/Pauline with Donkey Kong being the Head of Special Forces. This was done to give Pauline a role in the story, as well as explain why the “Great Guards” use DK’s body.

Dr Doak is now Oddjob/Toad to give him some sort of role in the story, as a result the idea of Toad “blending in” with the other scientists is ridiculous.

Thanks for that pal. Not sure why Mishkin can’t be the defence minister anymore so that Pauline can be in the story, but whatever, I guess if you spend four months creating this stuff it’s your call. You can actually buy the game and play through it on your PC, but I’m not really sure how popular that’s going to be. Surely people have a better way to use their time?

For more Goldeneye, check out the uncompressed version of the soundtrack. Massive.
