You might remember that last week we brought you the news that Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland had recorded a new podcast about his experience ‘managing’ the festival that he had recorded on a prison payphone and would be premiering over the weekend.

I haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast yet – not sure if I’m going to to be honest but maybe – but one interesting piece of news that has emerged from its publication is that Billy has now been sent to solitary confinement in his prison because of it. Lol.

After McFarland posted a teaser to his podcast last week, he was immediately placed in 23 hour a day solitary confinement in the Federal Correctional Institution of Elkton , pending a full investigation by the Bureau Of Prisons into the podcast and photographs of the prison he posted on his Instagram account (which isn’t personally managed by him). He could remain there for up to 90 days before he is released depending upon how that goes.

McFarlan’s lawyer Jason Russo said the following about his client’s situation:

We believe the investigation stems from his participation in the podcast and the photographs that were taken and utilised in the trailer, which were all properly taken.

We don’t believe he’s violated any rule or regulation, and there can’t possibly be anything else.

He’s been a model prisoner there.

They absolutely should have already known about the podcast.

Inmates are allowed to use phones and all calls are screened by the prison.

They’re also permitted disposable cameras that are screened prior to being sent out.

It does sound like they’ve got a pretty much watertight argument there, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the US prison system isn’t going to like McFarland doing something like posting pictures from within it or recording a podcast and making them look a bit stupid by doing that. And to be fair, Billy was a major dickhead to everyone during Fyre Festival so there’s no way that anyone is going to think that he’s being harshly treated during this. It’s a win win for everyone and I imagine he’ll be stuck in solitary for the foreseeable future. Good.
