A gynaecologist in France has been suspended from his practice for a month for refusing to examine a transgender patient after saying he was only qualified to treat “real women.”

Dr Victor Acharian refused to see the 26-year-old patient, who attended the gynaecological appointment with their boyfriend, in August 2023.

Dr. Acharian told the patient that it was not his “specialty”, adding he was “not competent, but I can guide you.”

This wasn’t good enough for the patient, who called the doctor transphobic, and then left an angry comment on the clinic’s Google reviews page.

The doctor replied that he only treated ‘real women’ and said he had ‘no skills to treat men, even if they have shaved their beards and come to tell my secretary that they have become women’.

The incident left the patient in a ‘black hole’ and in ‘shock’, according to French press.

Transgender rights organisations got involved and lodged a series of complaints, coming to the patient’s defence.

In December, Dr Acharian appeared before the French Medical Council and has now been suspended for a month from March 1, with an additional five months’ probation, the Times reported.

Trans protest groups condemn Dr Victor Acharian for saying he was not qualified to treat the transgender patient

Édouard Martial, a lawyer who represented the patient, said: ‘We have the satisfaction of having confirmation that what happened that day was totally abnormal.’

Trans group SOS Homophobie claimed that the doctor’s actions could have been ‘also punishable by criminal sanctions’.

Mar Cambrollé, president of the Trans Platform Federation in Spain, also previously told Euronews: ‘It is brutal to deny the right to health, it is a universal right that all citizens have.’

Unbelievable. I mean, what did this transgender patient want the gynaecologist to do exactly? Play pretend for 20 minutes? Unless I’m missing something, it sounds like this doctor was just trying to be honest and ethical, and got suspended for it. He could have easily taken the patient’s money and gone along with it, but he didn’t. Is that a crime? Well, apparently so in France, in 2025.

Dr. Acharian, who practises in Pau, southwestern France, has the right to appeal against the suspension, but it’s unknown yet whether he will. He did apologise for any offence caused weeks after the incident and said he had offered to refer the trans patient to a specialist who could help.
