They always say you should treat fast food workers with respect, but I never considered that one of the reasons why might be that they could pull out a gun and murder you at the drive-thru. Well, that’s what happened at this Florida branch of Checkers after the customer asked for more mayonnaise packets, which somehow led to a full-on argument that had fatal consequences.
Elijah Travis Mackey, 23, was working at a Checkers restaurant on Wednesday night when he ‘engaged in a verbal dispute with Wesley Robertson regarding his food order’, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
As per the sheriff’s office: ‘The confrontation escalated, leading Elijah Mackey to shoot Wesley Robertson.”
Robertson was rushed to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.
Apparently what happened is this: Robertson (the customer) was picking up his order from the front drive-thru window when he got into an argument with a female employee and asked to speak with a manager. According to a witness, Robertson had asked for more mayonnaise packets with his order.
CCTV footage shows Mackey (the female employee’s colleague) climbing out of the drive-thru widow and walking out to speak with Robertson.
A witness said Robertson made a derogatory remark to Mackey, who then (allegedly) pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at the customer’s chest.
Now we don’t know for sure what it was that Robertson said that prompted Mackey to pull out a gun and end his life, but I’m guessing it wasn’t bad enough to warrant killing him. I mean, what the hell is a fast food worker doing taking a gun to work anyway? Just makes it seem like this lad was itching to shoot someone whenever the opportunity presented itself. Only in America, I guess.
Mackey fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterward when police found him hiding in a stairwell. He’s now been charged with first-degree premeditated murder.
A Checkers spokesperson said:
‘The actions of this one employee do not reflect the values of the thousands of our hardworking employees across the country.
‘We are working closely with the police in their investigation, and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family.’
Well, not much else they can say really. All they can do is assure future customers that they won’t be shot at the drive-thru while collecting their orders, even if they start acting like complete Karens over mayonnaise packets and are verbally abusive to staff (allegedly). Good to know.
