Eamonn Holmes has issued an apology after using a ‘racial slur’ to describe Kerry Katona’s cosmetic surgery on GB News.
As the Atomic Kitten legend blabbed on about the results of her facelift, Holmes asked her whether or not she looked ‘Oriental’. Oh the humanity! Watch below:
Kerry explained her facelift by saying: ‘I had them done over a year ago now. You know all it was I could… it was making my eyes feel a bit heavy so I had an uplift. But what I don’t like is when…’
Interrupting, Eamonn asked: ‘And you don’t look Oriental or anything do you?’
Looking into it, it does actually appear that the word ‘oriental’ is considered a slur nowadays, due its association with colonialism and the idea that it ‘exoticizes’ people of varying Asian identities. I honestly had no idea, but apparently it’s not something you can say on TV, and it’s probably extra bad if you say it on GB News where race seems to come into every topic of discussion.
Anyway, Eamon was then seemingly forced to apologise later in the broadcast by his bosses, saying the following:
‘Apparently you’re not allowed to describe someone as looking Oriental or… I don’t know how I would end up describing Kerry Katona if her eyes change shape.
‘I don’t know how I’m going to say does she look like someone from some other country in the eastern of the world… The world is ridiculous.
‘How you have to apologise for people… if she painted herself or… I don’t know I can’t get into this. But anyway.
‘Kerry looks well. I’m sorry if you don’t look well or we have offended you in any way or… oh I don’t know.’
Not really sure it counts as an apology if you apologise and then moan about having to apologise, but oh well. Of course, Kerry Katona wasn’t offended, and took to her Instagram Stories later to defend Holmes, saying:
‘Eamonn Holmes has been one of my oldest and longest friends, and I absolutely adore and love him to bits.
‘He said absolutely nothing untoward towards me. I wasn’t offended in any way, shape or form. I absolutely adore Eamonn. What’s going on. I don’t even know.
‘Me, speechless? It would take a lot to make me bloody speechless, that’s for sure. But Eamonn, I love you truly. I adore you. I have no idea where this has come from.’
Surely no one who watches GB News actually complained about it in the first place? Well, I suppose they’ve got to cover their backsides either way. It does raise an interesting discussion over what alternative word Holmes could’ve used in the place of ‘oriental’ though. Asian? Chinese? I guess he would have had to apologise for those and all. That’s just the way of the world at the moment.
