The old school gaming market has exploded in recent years, with the demand for playing retro Nintendo, Sega and even Amiga/Amstrad games going through the roof.

With that in mind, it makes perfect sense that someone would finally bring some of these games direct to your mobile phone. The initiative is called Sega Forever, and they aim to bring all of the classic titles released on the Mega Drive to your mobile.

Currently there are only five available at the launch, but there are gonna be a whole lot more in the future. At the moment you get to choose from Sonic The Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, Phantasy Star II, and Comix Zone, which is hardly a bad selection is it?

To make matters even better, every game is also 100% free. This does mean that they come plastered with ads, but if you want to get rid of them then all you have to do is pay £1.99 for the premium option and they’re gone. Awesome.

If you haven’t already grabbed your phone to download them and are enjoying playing them, then check out what Sega executive Mike Evans has to say about Sega Forever:

We’ve never before done something that really crosses all of the different gaming eras, and isn’t prejudice against someone because they grew up in the ’80s versus the ’90s’ and so what we’re trying to do is look at how we can take content that spans two decades and make it all available in the same place.

We’ve spent a lot of time, and we still haven’t finished, trying to get the experience as good as possible on the device itself. But one of the decisions that we made is that not everyone is going to want to play on a touchscreen, so if you’re that engaged in the content you can cheaply buy a Bluetooth controller. If you’re setting up with your TV back at home you can even have a console-like experience in your living room.

We haven’t gone in and changed the original ROM itself, we’ve kept them as faithful emulations. Which was important in making this project work commercially.

Awesome. New games are going to be released every two weeks so it shouldn’t be too long until all your favourites are available. Can’t wait for Streets Of Rage and Golden Axe personally – two of the absolute bests.

For more of the same, check out this guy who makes completely sick modified NES consoles. They’re dope.
