Yet another story today about a British national facing a lengthy spell behind bars abroad – except this one didn’t have to smuggle any drugs into the country to make it happen.

Alicia Kemp, 24, from Redditch, Worcestershire, is said to have spent six hours drinking before ploughing into the back of 51-year-old Thanh Phan on a footpath in Perth’s central business district in Australia on May 3.

Mr Phan died in hospital from brain injuries suffered in the collision. Kemp also had a passenger on the back of her scooter, a 26-year-old woman, who suffered a fractured skull and broken nose when she was launched into the air from the collision.

Kemp is now facing 20 years behind bars in Australia for dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and dangerous driving occasioning death.

She has already been denied bail because the risk of her fleeing in the face of a 20-year maximum sentence is too great, according to magistrates. Which actually makes sense, to be fair.

Kemp had been out drinking with a friend from 2.30pm on the day of the crash, until the pair were asked to leave a venue for being too drunk.

From there, they hired an e-scooter just before 8.30pm, with Kemp’s ‘inexplicably dangerous’ riding causing pedestrians to have to get out of the way to avoid being hit (this was all caught on CCTV, in addition to the crash).

She was travelling at up to 25kph at the time of the collision, hitting Mr Phan while he was waiting to cross the road.

What a way to go – being driven into by a drunk Brit on an e-scooter as you’re waiting to cross the street. No wonder prosecutors are seeking at a 20-year sentence; it’s just such a stupid, avoidable tragedy for the man’s family and friends to have to go through.

Mr Phan’s family paid tribute to a ‘beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend’.

Just goes to show, you don’t need to be an international drugs smuggler or a violent idiot to end up spending a good chunk of your life behind bars in a foreign country. Come on, Brits abroad. Stop giving the rest of us a bad name.

RIP Thanh Phan.
