Despite no criminal trial taking place yet, it looks like UK Parliament is already contacting social media companies and asking them to demonetise Russell Brand’s content.

Official documents from the Culture, Media and Sports Committee at the House of Commons addressed to TikTok and Rumble appear to be pressuring the platforms to ensure Brand can’t financially profit from his videos:

Now, this does seem a bit weird. Obviously the allegations against Russell Brand need to be taken seriously and put to a full and proper trial, just like any other criminal investigation. It’s pretty wild that Parliament would interfere before this happens, and attempt to influence social media companies into disabling the accused’s income and further damaging their reputation when everything we’ve been told is still only “alleged” at this point.

Now you might say that this period of controversy is immensely profitable for Russell Brand as everyone flocks to his social media accounts to see what’s going on, so maybe it stands to reason that he shouldn’t be profiting financially from that. That may be so, but the fact remains that he is still only accused of these crimes, so it seems a bit extreme to reach this point before the man has been found guilty in court. That’s not the proper way of doings things, is it?

Apparently Rumble have told Parliament to get bent so we’ll see what happens with that. We know that YouTube has already demonetised Brand and I’m guessing the rest will follow suit. Will the man have his day in court? We’ll have to wait and see.
