The first season of True Detective is one of the greatest single seasons of TV but it has been a TOUGH watch ever since. Season 2 was awful, Season 3 was better, but then Season 4 was as bad as Season 2. As such, literally no one was asking for a True Detective Season 5.
Well, that was until news broke the other day that Nicolas Cage is in talks for the lead role in the fifth season, in which he would play New York detective Henry Logan.
Obviously anything involving Nicolas Cage is worth checking out, but for whatever reason, HBO have decided to ask writer-showruner Issa Lopez to return for Season 5, even after she wrote one of the worst endings in TV history for Season 4.
Season 4 SPOILERS if you care: the story revolved around a bunch of scientists at a remote research post in the Arctic Circle who were found naked in the snow, after apparently fleeing something within their station. Intriguing enough, but it then turns out the scientists were killed by a crew of cleaning ladies who carried out a military-style raid on the facility as revenge for them killing on their relatives. How dumb is that? Even an A+ actress like Jodie Foster couldn’t save it.
Aside from Lopez’s stupid story, the chemistry wasn’t great between the actors and it all ended up being a big disappointment. And so it’s a little disheartening that Issa Lopez is getting another crack at the script, but we love Nicolas Cage and so will be tuning in with high hopes. You just know he’s got a Matthew McConaughey Season 1-level performance in him.
Maybe they could get John Travolta involved and we could have a True Detective: Face Off Part 2? That would be nice.
