I’m pretty sure most of us out there are looking forward to when we retire – if that ever even happens for our generation – so we can lie around and play golf all the time or whatever, but the same can’t be said of 72 year old Australian Daryl Holmes who was so bored after one day of leaving work that he decided to go back to the daily grind at McDonald’s.

The former disability sector worker isn’t labouring away in the kitchen or on the tills at the Wallsend McDonald’s in Sydney, but instead operates as a customer experience leader, which is pretty much a fancy way of saying he greets customers, helps them use the self service kiosks and then brings the food over to their tables too. He loves it when McDonald’s Monopoly season comes around as that means he can dress up as Rich Uncle Pennybags and really bring the hype to customers as well.

Seems like a great guy to have around the place. Would probably do it unpaid by the sound of things as well. Here’s what Daryl had to say about his role:

I’ve been playing gold all my life, so didn’t need any more time to pursue my hobbies.

I’ve always loved to work and my wife still has several more years of work left, so I wasn’t going to sit back.

I was going to go out and find something that I could actually apply myself to and enjoy it at the same time.

I enjoy passing down my wisdom to the other employees, namely the importance of enjoying what you do, learning from it and making sure they’ve got someone when times are tough to talk to.

I see the role as like being their grandfather and I really enjoy working with everyone here.

It’s unbelievable, it’s a real privilege to work for them.

Well that’s just great for Daryl isn’t it? Sounds like a genuinely nice guy. I do think it’s kind of lame that he’s voluntarily going to work at McDonald’s when he could just be sleeping or hanging out on the beach all day or pretty much anything in the world, but if it’s making him happy and everyone frequenting the store loves him too – which they do apparently – then who am I to judge? Enjoy your retirement buddy.
