You may remember the story of the Ukrainian OnlyFans model who was found with devastating injuries on the side of the road in Dubai earlier this year.
Maria Kovalchuk, 20, had been missing in Dubai for 10 days before she was discovered on the side of the road with a shattered spine and broken limbs, with no one able to work out how she ended up there.
Well the good news is that Maria has since woken up from her coma, and has now spoken out for the first time about what she remembers as she continues to recover from her ordeal in Norway.
Speaking with Russian presenter Ksenia Sobchak, Maria explained that it all began when she missed her flight from Dubai to Thailand after she overslept.
As she checked out of her hotel, she bumped into a Russian man she had met a karaoke bar earlier in her trip.
She told him about her situation, and he invited her to stay in his room and told her they could fly to Thailand together in his private jet. How nice of him!
The man had three friends with him – a man and two women.
Maria explained: ‘We went up to the room. The guys were half-sober, they had just come from a party. And overall, everything went well throughout the day. We talked, discussed our trip to Thailand.
‘I even called my mum, said that everything was fine, the guys were normal. I called in their presence, to be on the safe side.’
Things took a turn the next day, however, as the men began behaving ‘aggressively’ towards her.
‘They were drinking very strong alcohol, like whiskey. They started to tease me, like, why don’t I drink.
‘Then there were some aggressive pushes, they started to joke: ‘You belong to us. We’ll do whatever we want’.’
‘I tried to take it as a joke, because it was really weird.
‘They started behaving inappropriately, smashing bottles on the floor.
‘After that, they took my personal belongings, which included my passport.’
Maria said that the men had ‘hinted’ at wanting to have sex with her, but that she gave no indication that she was up for it.
Realising that she was in an extremely shady situation, Maria tried to leave the hotel room, but was blocked from doing so. Eventually she managed to escape when the men stepped out onto the balcony, and hid in a construction site when she saw that they were chasing after her.
The men then found her and ‘beat her’, she said.
‘I ran away. Then, already on the street, when I was, I didn’t see them anymore, but I knew they were coming.
‘I ran to the nearest building, just scared, and ran in, hid there. It was just an unfinished building.’
Maria says she doesn’t remember any of the violence that led to her injuries and her coma, and CCTV footage has since been erased.
‘Three months have passed — the police waited until the cameras were automatically wiped [after this period]. So now there’s no evidence.
‘Most likely, there was a blow to the head, I suppose. The next scene [that] I remember is me asking for help from a passing car, which had already stopped and called an ambulance and the police.
‘I think that maybe I was thrown. Or it was a beating. One of two options, the injuries looked like either a beating or a fall.’
The men accused by Maria were both briefly detained by police in Dubai- but released after just 24 hours. Meanwhile, Maria needed three surgeries to save her life, and later had a fourth procedure.
So it doesn’t sound like there’s much hope of any justice here, which is basically what you’d expect when it comes to Russian private jet owners living it up in Dubai. There were a whole bunch of rumours initially about ‘Porta Potty’ parties and of course it’s possible that Maria has left out or even forgotten some key details as it pertains to her relationship with these Russians.
Still, even if it went down exactly like she says it did, it’s not like there weren’t a million red flags to watch out for already. The first one probably being when this random Russian man invited her to stay with him so they could travel to Thailand on his private jet together later.
Well anyway, we’re not here to victim blame. Whatever happened out there, it’s just such an awful thing for a 20-year-old girl to go through. Fortunately she lived to tell the tale, and her experience can serve as a lesson to all the other young, naive 20-somethings frolicking in Dubai right now. Stay safe, ladies!
