Russia is now a week into its invasion of Ukraine and things don’t really seem to be running on schedule, with a whole bunch of setbacks for Putin’s troops due to the absolute badassery of the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry embarrassed Moscow further this week by inviting Russian mums to come and ‘collect’ Russian troops captured in battle:

A decision has been taken to hand over captured Russian troops to their mothers if they come to collect them in Ukraine, in Kyiv.

Kyiv Independent reports that Ukrainian civilians are providing captured Russians with tea and food, and are letting them speak to their mothers via video call.

Other captured Russian troops aren’t being treated quite so nicely, even though they are still allowed a call to their parents to explain how f*cked they are:

Reported translation:
Dad: What are you going to do?
Russian: I don’t know…
Dad: Here’s your mom.
Mom: where are you?
Russian: I’ve been captured.
Mom: What do you mean?
Russian: In Ukraine, captured.
Mom: How did you get there?
Russian: They said go to Ukraine so we went. Nobody knew anything.
Russian: I don’t know what to do.
Mom: Who did you go with?
Russian: We all went
Mom: Where exactly?
Russian: I don’t know the location
Mom: Where?
Russian: I don’t know!
Russian: Mom, call the commanders, call someone.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk last week asked for the International Red Cross to help repatriate the dead bodies of Russian soldiers:

There are thousands of invaders’ bodies. This is a humanitarian need.

We ask for the bodies of the invaders to leave Ukrainian territory and go to Russia.

We call upon Russians again to make it so that there are fewer bodies of your sons, of your men, otherwise there will be thousands of them. I say it again, victory will be ours.

Last week a platoon of Russian soldiers who surrendered claimed they weren’t aware they had been sent out to kill, according to the Ukrainian military. The platoon’s commander claimed he only learned of the invasion the day before and believed they were going to return home:

Nobody thought that we were going to kill. We were not going to fight – we were collecting information.

Doesn’t really sound like Putin prepared very well for this, does it? He must have thought invading Ukraine was going to be so easy that he didn’t even give his troops enough supplies, and it looks like half of them don’t even know what they’re supposed to be doing either. Seems the longer the war drags on for, the more Russian morale is likely to fall.
