There’s a lot less coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the mainstream media than there was a few weeks ago, but by all accounts whenever you do hear something about it then it seems as though it isn’t going too well for Putin.

This latest piece of information on the situation continues that theme, with a Ukrainian official now claiming that Putin is so desperate for back up forces that he’s taken to conscripting children from patriotic youth clubs to come and fight in the conflict. Here’s what Lyudmyla Denisova, the Ukrainian parliament commissioner on human rights, had to say about it:

They have been doing military training and there have been deaths among these teenagers.

Now they are promoting the entry into the army of civilians, including children in the temporarily occupied territories.

In doing so the Russian Federation has violated the laws and customs of war provided by the 1949 Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians and the rights of children.

The recruitment of children is a violation of international law.

In the city of Starobílsʹk, the largest in the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk region it is planned to open 400 places of the Cossack Cadet Corps.

The decision was made in late March in Luhansk during an extended meeting on the support and development of the cossack component in the LPR education system.

This is in addition to cadet bodies and classes the occupation authorities plan to open in Severodonetsk and Lysyčansk.

As of the end of 2021, in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk region, 62 cadet classes were functioning, in which over 1,200 children studied, and two cadet bodies, in which 417 children were taught.

It’s believed around 205 children have been killed and 367 children injured since the war began.

That’s kind of a confusing statement, but I guess ultimately she’s saying that Putin is recruiting young teenagers into his army and some of them have died and been injured already and that’s not good and quite frankly kinda scary and also illegal. Hopefully somebody does something about this quickly, but the way that it’s been going so far it seems like the war will continue to rage on for a long time with no real outcome in sight.

Denisova has appealed to the UN to consider these points during their investigation into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but I’m not really sure when that investigation is going to be concluded or what the results of it are going to be? Again, I hope they do something about all these children, or even just about the war in general. Not holding my breath though.
