The school which put a 12-year-old into isolation for wearing a Union Jack dress to ‘culture day’ has been forced to close early for summer due to ‘extremist threats’ and ‘personal threats to staff.’
Bilton School in Rugby, Warwickshire, said it is closing “in the interests of student and staff safety” after receiving threats from, presumably, hardcore flag-sh@gging types.
A letter sent to parents yesterday states the school is closing earlier than normal for the summer holidays, citing “extremist abuse online and via our telephone systems”.
The letter reads: “Over the last week the school has been the target of extremist abuse online and via our telephone systems, which deeply saddens us. The nature and tone of this abuse has escalated in recent days including personal threats to staff. Our primary responsibility remains the safety and wellbeing of every child and member of staff. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. The safety of our school community must come first.”
Earlier this week, the school apologised to 12-year-old Courtney Wright and her family for segregating the pupil due to her wearing a Union Jack dress and the fact she chose to celebrate her British heritage at the event.
Grade A student Courtney was told: “You get to celebrate being British every day, this is for everybody else.”
The ’embarrassed’ Year 7 student was made to sit in reception until her dad came to pick her up. Dad Stuart Field, 47, said he was ‘gobsmacked’ to learn his daughter had been segregated from her peers due to her choice of attire.
He said: “Courtney was so embarrassed and couldn’t understand what she’d done wrong.
“She should not be made to feel embarrassed about being British. And she shouldn’t be punished for celebrating British culture and history; nobody else I’ve spoken to can quite get their heads around it.
“Another with a St Georges flag and another with a Welsh flag were not allowed in either. It was ridiculous. It just seemed anything that was remotely British wasn’t allowed.
“It’s ironic they were having a cultural diversity day but then decided to single out a group of people.”
The man has a point, really. What’s really lame though is that Tommy Robinson has swooped in on this story and has already met with Courtney and her dad, and has confirmed that she’ll be a special guest at his protest in London in September, and will be wearing her special Union Jack dress. Jeez, is that really necessary?
I guess you can only blame the completely avoidable and stupid mistake from the staff at Bilton School for how they treated Courtney. It does feel like maybe one or two staff members weren’t thinking straight, and it wasn’t necessarily school policy to turn away children who turned up to celebrate their Britishness. A massive, unforgivable error in any case, especially in 2025, and one that Tommy, GB News et al are going to take full advantage of.
As for the school closing early for summer, happy days for the students! Courtney will be the most popular kid around for quite some time, I think.
