Robert De Niro has shared his response to his child coming out as a trans woman at the age of 29, and says he ‘doesn’t know what the big deal is.’
Airyn De Niro, former known as Aaron De Niro, recently came out as transgender in an interview with Them, and people were sure it would make her dad’s head explode, given he’s an old school Italian American man in his 80s. Turns out Robert De Niro has nothing but “love and support” for Airyn’s transition, telling Variety:
“I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is. I love all my children.”
Well, I suppose that’s what a dad is supposed to do: unconditionally love and support their offspring, no matter what. Robert De Niro has 7 kids (his oldest child is 53 and his youngest is 2), so I guess he’s something of an expert in parenthood at this point, although I doubt he could have ever imagined one of his kids coming out as trans back in the day. Now that it’s happened, he seems totally cool with it.

De Niro’s reaction to his child coming out as trans is the complete opposite reaction to what Elon Musk had when his own daughter came out as transgender. What’s really interesting is how many famous people seem to have transgender kids these days? Cher, Sade, Charlize Theron, Jamie Less Curtis, Marlon Wayans, Warren Beatty, Chester Bennington, the list goes on. The only one who has very publicly taken issue with it is Elon Musk, which is pretty funny.
Well anyway, as long as Airyn De Niro is happy living as a trans woman, I guess that’s all that matters, It’s also a bit of an arrow in Robert De Niro’s quiver that he can now say he’s got a trans daughter, given he’s something of a liberal spokesperson these days. Fair play?
