A PhD student from China who was studying at UCL in London has been sentenced for 11 rapes of 10 different women – only three of whom have ben identified – across London and China. However, detectives believe he may have raped up to 50 more.
Zhenhao Zou, 28, kitted out his £4,000-a-month soundproofed apartment in Elephant & Castle, south London, with hidden cameras and would film himself raping his victims after plying them with alcohol, ecstasy and date rape drug GHB.
In court, he was described as ‘one of the most prolific predators the UK has ever seen’, and so he was always going to end up with a substantial sentence.
With this in mind, Zhenhao Zou decided to offer a plea deal to the court: he offered to undergo chemical castration in exchange for a reduced sentence and avoiding a full life term.
Obviously, the judge turned this down and described it as a manipulative tactic – “an attempt to get a lighter sentence.”
The judge further noted that Zou did not show genuine remorse and displayed “no understanding of the meaning of consent.”
And so, in the end, Zhenhao Zou received a life sentence with a minimum of 24 years, although I’m not sure what’s stopping them from also chemically castrating him, since that appears to be on the cards for future sex crimes. What better guinea pig that one of the worst predators the country has ever seen?
In addition to being a serial rapist, Zou was also found guilty of offences including voyeurism, possession of extreme pornographic images, and false imprisonment.
In one video shown to jurors at his trial, a semi-conscious woman begged Zou to stop raping her, but he replied: ‘Don’t push me, it’s pointless…the sound insulation here is very good’.
Despite so much of Zou’s offending taking place in China, investigators there refused to grant permission for his home to be raided. Which could have something to do with his dad being a Chinese Communist Party officer and wealthy industrialist? Just a thought.
Fortunately, he had no such luck in the UK, and will now remain behind bars until his mid-50s at least. Somehow I don’t think he’ll have a problem entertaining the ‘ladies’ in prison.
