After all the conspiracy theories over whether the Liverpool parade motorist really was a 53-year-old British male, we can finally put a name and face to the suspect: 53-year-old local businessman Paul Doyle.
Ex-Royal Marine and father-of-three Doyle has been charged with dangerous driving, grievous bodily harm with intent and wounding with intent, after driving his car into the crowds at the Liverpool title parade on Monday, injuring at least 79 people, including a nine-year-old.
Here’s everything else we know about Paul Doyle…
– After leaving the Army, Doyle went to the University of Liverpool earning a degree in Psychology and Maths before forging a career in IT services.
– From 2017 to 2023, he worked at investment firm Rathbones Group, as a group cyber security manager.
– A former colleague who worked for him for a year told The i Paper he was “very understanding and good to work for”.
– He currently works as “acting head of cyber” for his own IT company, and promotes himself as an “ethical hacker” available for hire.
– His neighbours were ‘shocked’ to hear of his arrest, with onesaying “He seemed a nice man, very outgoing,”
During a press conference this afternoon, Merseyside Police assistant chief constable Jenny Sims said:
‘As always, our thoughts remain with all of those injured and affected by this appalling incident, which took place during the Liverpool Football Club parade on Monday.
‘As you have heard from our CPS colleagues, the man arrested by Merseyside Police following the incident on Water Street has now been charged with seven serious offences.’
She said the full list of charges were two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of attempted, unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Doyle has also been charged with one count of dangerous driving, contrary to section two of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Ms Sims added:
‘I fully understand how this incident has left us all shocked and saddened, and I know many will continue to have concerns and questions.
‘Our detectives are working tirelessly, with diligence and professionalism to seek the answer to all of those questions. When we are able to we will provide further information.’
We also know that Doyle followed an ambulance which had been let into Water Street to help treat someone who had a heart attack. Obviously, the road was otherwise closed to vehicles during the parade, but Doyle saw the opportunity and went for it.
Will be interesting to know what went on from there, exactly. It doesn’t appear as though he followed the ambulance with the intention of then running people over, so something must have triggered the situation. We’ve seen clips of pedestrians punching and kicking his car as he was stationary, but would that be enough to prompt someone to run over crowds of innocent people?? Fight or flight against 1,000s of Scousers?
There was an initial report that Paul Doyle was high on drugs, but there doesn’t seem to be a ‘drug driving’ charge in the list of charges.
Now that everyone knows his identity, I’m sure more information will be forthcoming soon. Speedy recovery to the victims. What a miracle no one was killed!
