The survival horror genre has seen a real turnaround this year with the (justified) hype surrounding the release of Resident Evil 7 a couple of months ago, but now Outlast 2 is coming and it’s going to smash that game right out of the ball park.

The first Outlast game was a great success in terms of indie games, and the sequel looks as though it’s built on that impressively. It bears little resemblance to the first, but it does have similarities in that you play a journalist investigating a murder in the desert of Arizona. Once your helicopter crashes, you and your wife uncover a weird cult obsessed with the end of the world and you then do your best to survive creeping around their compound.
Unlike Resident Evil 7, Outlast 2 gives you absolutely no way to defend yourself so you literally have to sneak around as stealthily as possible or spend most of the game running away and hiding from psychopaths. That obviously makes it a shit tonne more scary and also way more ‘realistic’, as if you ever did find yourself in that situation then it’s unlikely there would be loads of guns lying around for you to help yourself.

Looks tense right, and the reviews I’ve read of it say that it’s about 100 times scarier than Resident Evil 7 – which made me shit my pants – to the extent that at some points people didn’t even want to keep playing because they were so scared of what was around the next corner. Uh oh.
Sounds like my kind of game basically, and you don’t even have to wait too long for it to come out – you’re able to download it on PS4, Xbox One Or Steam right now. Go for it – if you’ve got the guts.
For more of the same, check out this Resident Evil 7 supercut. Still scary, even if this is scarier.
