Striking Images Of New York City’s Squatter Community In The 1990s

After being evicted from her New York apartment in 1992, photographer Ash Thayer wandered around the grittiest parts of the city taking pictures of the squatters that had taken up residency in the area’s many run-down, abandoned buildings.

This particular group of squatters were known as ‘See Skwat’, and as you’re about to see, they made themselves pretty comfortable despite the lack of plumbing, electricity, and sometimes walls, floors and roofs.
