It’s been a few months since Fortnite burst into our lives and changed the landscape of online multiplayer gaming forever and whilst I knew that kids were really really into it, I had no idea that people were getting so addicted to it that they were actually physically pissing themselves in order to keep playing.

This is the sad situation that one nine year old girl found herself in after staying up playing the game until 5am every night, sometimes so intensely that she would end up pissing herself instead of getting up to go to the toilet. That’s some kind of addiction huh?

36 year old Carol described her daughter’s breakdown (surnames and pictures haven’t been included to protect her identity) to the Daily Mirror:

We had no idea, when we let her play the game, of the addictive nature or the impact it could have on her mental health.

She is in therapy for the addiction after she became withdrawn, agitated and disturbed from playing up to ten hours a day – sometimes playing until dawn, wetting herself so she didn’t have to leave the screen.

This is a serious issue which is destroying our little girl’s life and someone needs to step in to ban it before it becomes an epidemic.

We got called in by her head teacher asking if everything was OK. She had fallen asleep twice in lessons and her grades were slipping.

When we asked our daughter what the problem was, she became unusually argumentative and aggressive, which we just put down to her hormones.

She started saying she was too tired to attend gym classes, ballet and our weekend visits to church.

Her grades in school were slipping too and she was falling asleep in lessons.

There were £50 monthly charges on our credit card to Microsoft and she told us it could be some extras she’d paid for on Fortnite.

Of course we were furious and confiscated her Xbox. But then she lashed out and hit my husband in the face.

My husband saw her light on in the night and found her sitting on a urine-soaked cushion playing the game.

I found her backside was red-raw. She was so hooked to the game she wouldn’t even go to the toilet.

Crying, she told us that every night for the past two months she had waited until we were asleep and then got up to play, sometimes until 5am.

We worked out that she could have been playing for up to ten hours a day, and we’d had no idea.

I urge every parent out there to know what this game can do, how it sucks young children in and could ruin lives.

I mean geez she’s right because it sounds like her Fortnite addiction has completely screwed up her life there. Apparently she’s doing better now and is getting back on track but it’s kinda scary to think that you could be that young and so addicted to something. I mean even heroin addicts probably have some time to go to the toilet every now and again and don’t just sit around shooting up and lying in a puddle of their own urine. At least I think that’s true for the most part?

Anyway, if you’ve got a kid playing Fortnite or you yourself are playing it then you should probably take the necessary precautions to try and ensure that this doesn’t end up happening to you and yours. Sounds like it’s a pretty serious problem.
