Reform UK seem to be making gains on both Labour and the Conservatives in local council elections across England, with Dame Andrea Jenkyns winning the Greater Lincolnshire seat with a majority of nearly 40,000 votes.

Following her victory, Jenkyns got a bit too excited and made a dig about a rival candidate’s accent. Responding to claims that she’d been ‘parachuted in’ to contest the election for Reform, Jenkyns said: “The campaign was also filled with irony, as one of the candidates said I was parachuted in… She said it with her South African accent.”

Welp, not an ideal thing to say when Reform are always being accused of bigotry and racism. Naturally, a journalist was quick to pounce on this comment, and Jenkyns did not appreciate it one bit:

Jenkyns claimed she’d mentioned the candidate’s accent as a way of calling out the ‘irony’ of her comments.

“Because the irony of saying someone’s being parachuted in who’s not even from the country.” she said.

“I think actually, I’m not even going to answer any more of your questions,”

“I think that your questioning is quite divisive. You’re looking into things when it was a little play with words, it was a little joke because of the irony. Do you not understand irony?”

Ooh, feisty!

Obviously Reform winning seats is one thing, but actually doing well is quite another, so now’s the time for them to show their voters and everyone else what they’re really all about. It’s always fun to troll and complain and make little digs when you’re the opposition, but now that they’ve gained some literal ground, it’s time for action. Chances this doesn’t turn out to be a complete and utter disaster for Jenkyns, Farage and co?
