Throughout history I don’t think that there’s one criminal organisation that inspires more fear in people than the Mafia.

Whilst most of the television depictions of the crime syndicate centre around New York, we do occasionally see glimpses of their origins in Italy, but now we’re going deep with Netflix’s new Italian drama centred around the modern day Italian mafia named ‘Suburra: The Series’. The series is based on the book of the same name by Carlo Bonini and Giancarlo de Cataldo and takes place over 20 days as the state, church, mafia and local gangs fight for control over Rome.

That certainly looked like it escalated quickly didn’t it? Whilst it probably can’t match the production values of its American counterparts, it definitely looks like it’s going to be a violent, brutal and ultimately devastating tale of betrayal and deceit in the Italian capital that will be well worth tuning into. Might even help you learn Italian too, so bonus points for that.

For more of the same, check out ‘Ozark’, another new gangster series on Netflix. This time set in America though.
