There are some hot takes out there, but I think this one from perpetually washed up actor Mickey Rourke claiming that Tom Cruise is irrelevant because he basically doesn’t like him has to be one of the stupider ones out there.

Rourke was speaking to Piers Morgan on his ‘Uncensored’ show – which seems even more desperate to generate ‘controversial’ headlines if this is anything to go by – when he made his weird claim, stating the following:

The guy’s been doing the same ‘effing part for 35 years.

I got no respect for that.

I don’t care about money and power.

I care about when I watch Al Pacino work and Chris Walken and De Niro’s early work and Richard Harris’s work and Ray Winstone’s work.

That’s the kind of actor I want to be like. Monty Clift and Brando back in the day.

I think he’s irrelevant, in my world.

I think the crucial part there is that Rourke says Tom Cruise is ‘irrelevant in his world’, not everyone’s world. Anyone can see that Cruise isn’t irrelevant in popular culture because ‘Top Gun’ just crossed a billion dollars and is probably going to be the most successful movie of the year and it’s very likely that his new ‘Mission Impossible’ movie next summer will do similar numbers too.

Hell, whatever movie Cruise decides next probably has a good chance of doing so just because of how famous an actor he is. That’s definitely not irrelevant.

However, when you read Rourke’s words and understand that Cruise is irrelevant for him because he never takes on challenging roles and literally plays himself in every movie he’s in these days, you kinda sympathise with what he’s saying because it makes a lot of sense. It’s kinda what everyone’s thinking as well. Fair play to him for coming out and saying it.

I’m not really sure if Rourke is one to talk though? It seems like every movie I see him in, he plays some kind of washed up guy looking to set things right one last time. Granted I think I’ve only watched him in ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Sin City’ recently (maybe ‘Spun’ – that was 202 years ago though) but I don’t exactly think of tremendous range when I hear his name. He has got that Oscar though I suppose and that’s more than Tom Cruise can say.

For more of the same, check out what Miles Teller said that Tom Cruise has in store for ‘Top Gun 3‘. Not that irrelevant is he?
