A serial domestic abuser who caused his girlfriend to crash her car by deliberately pulling on the handbrake as she drove them home from Blackpool has walked free from court, and given the judge two thumbs up on his way out.

Ainsley White, 40, who has 36 previous convictions for 74 offences dating back to 1996 (many of them violent), also left his girlfriend with permanent scars by assaulting her when he was supposedly fixing the car by the roadside.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how the self-employed carpet fitter had been involved with Charlotte Alsop for roughly 10 weeks. During that time there was constant conflict and bouts of violence, including an incident where White dragged her down the stairs by her hair.

During another incident, White, who had been drinking and taking cocaine, threatened Alsop with a knife, saying: “I will f***ing kill you, you know. I didn’t want to but f***, I will.”

Later that evening, he gave Alsop a black eye and then handed her an ice pack and told her he wouldn’t allow he to leave the property until her facial injuries had healed, reports the ECHO.

On the night of the Blackpool incident, the couple had been arguing in the car when White decided to pull the handbrake, causing Alsop to “lose control and spin into a kerb”.

He then threw a wheel locking nut at her face while attempting to repair the damage and blaming her for the whole thing.

When quizzed by police on the permanent scar to his girlfriend’s face, White told them it had been caused by ‘mentally unstable patients’ at the mental health hospital she worked part-time at. What a guy.

In a statement which was read to the court on her behalf this week, Alsop said:

“Every time I see my scar, it reminds me about the incident and how it happened. I was always in fear of Mr White and lied about how I obtained my injuries.

“I was terrified of what he could potentially do to me. Now he’s in prison, I feel slightly better as I know he can’t get me. I’m anxious some of his associates might try to find my and hurt me or damage my property, which is why I don’t feel safe in my own home.”

Well, he was in prison, for about 9 months while awaiting his hearing. However, the judge decided he was now good to go free, even after a jury found him guilty of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and obstructing police during his arrest.

Instead, White was given a two-year community order with a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 30 days, a programme requirement, a six-month GPS trail monitoring requirement and a 10-year restraining order. He was also told to pay £500 in compensation, £250 in court costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

White reacted to his sentence by putting two thumbs up to the judge and saying: “Thank you.”

And so, it seems the judge felt that 9 months in prison was sufficient for this serial domestic abuser who’s been in trouble with the law consistently over the last 29 years. I guess the judge felt that White had already effectively served the time that they would have sentenced him to, it just got done in a backwards way where he served his time first before the trial.

Obviously, there’s an argument for how lenient the sentence is/was, especially as this guy has been found guilty of committing violent attacks on four different partners over the years, and also once assaulted another woman he met while out socialising. Do we really trust that he’s not going to put his hands on another woman ever again?

On your conscience be it, Judge Gwyn Jones…
