Kevin Smith has hinted at giving the ultimate stoner comedy ‘Mallrats’ a sequel for years. But now it looks like the teasing is being put to an end as the filmmaker has confirmed that we are getting a sequel in the form of a TV series.

The original film, which starred Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, and Ben Affleck (as well as the wonderful Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith AKA Jay and Silent Bob) is about two buddies who both get dumped by their girlfriends and seek refuge in the local mall. It was also a prequel to the absolute belter ‘Clerks’ and it does a great job at following up the slacker vibe. While it wasn’t massively successful when it first came out, it’s become a bit of a stoner cult classic.

On the upcoming ‘Mallrats’ series, Smith said:

Universal and I are just about to close our deal to do ‘Mallrats’ the series.

So instead of doing a ‘Mallrats’ movie, I’m going to do 10 episodes of a ‘Mallrats’ series.

Question is, will he do the movie justice? Even Smith himself is a little apprehensive, as he said that he’s unsure how it will turn out after 20 years since the original. However, it could totally work, but he just needs to make sure it still has the same vibe as the movie – as well as the original cast. Apparently most of them are up for a sequel, so if he manages to land that then he should be halfway there.

For old time’s sake, let’s check out a clip from the original:

Do you know what other classic 90s comedy is getting a sequel? ‘Human Traffic’. Yeah that’s right.
