A London Underground driver has been sacked after he was caught watching videos and knitting while behind the wheel. Anyone know when their next pay rise is due?
A commuter filmed the driver of the Northern Line train living his best life as he pulled away from Hendon Central:

The witness who caught the incident on camera said:
‘I was so surprised. I didn’t expect to see someone meant to be at work being so casual about the job.
‘Especially because, at the time, there were Tube strikes going on, so it felt mad they were complaining about the job then relaxing on it.
‘And, although I don’t know how automatic the system is for the Tube, I remember thinking that this person has the passengers’ lives in their hands.
‘It felt crazy that this driver wouldn’t take that more seriously.’
Transport for London confirmed the driver had been sacked:
‘This video was made earlier in the year. We carried out a full investigation and the person involved no longer works at TfL.’
Pretty cushy job if you think about it. Getting paid £70,000 a year to push a couple buttons, go on a bunch of strikes, and do some knitting/catch up on YouTube the rest of the time? Not to mention benefits like free travel on the TfL network for themselves and a nominated partner/family member, a 75% discount on National Rail Season Tickets, and a final salary pension scheme. It does make you wonder why the London Underground isn’t already fully automated at this point, but I suppose it would cost a f*** ton of money, a significant chunk of which would be used to fight the drivers union.
Knowing the UK, there’s probably a bunch of health and safety laws that wouldn’t allow full automation anyway. I guess maybe it’s time to stick a camera in the cockpit to catch drivers faffing around instead of relying on commuters to film it on their smartphones. Bet that’d make the job a bit less appealing.
