King Charles is clearly not a Star Wars guy (or a maths guy) after he asked Natalie Portman if she was in the original Star Wars that came out before she was even born.

Portman — who played Padmé Amidala in the prequels — told Variety about the run-in she had with the then-future monarch at the UK premiere of ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ in 1999. There was so much hype around the film at the time that even the Royal Family turned up to the premiere!

Portman recalls: “I remember Prince Charles, he was then Prince Charles, asked me if I was in the originals. I was like, ‘No, I’m 18!’ But he was very friendly.”

Portman was born 1981, which is 4 years after the original Star Wars came out in 1977. In fact she wasn’t even born when the first sequel, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, came out in 1980. Which you’d think was pretty obvious, especially when you consider how young she was (and looked) in the ‘Phantom Menace’.

So what made Charles think that it was even remotely feasible than an unborn Natalie Portman could have appeared in the original Star Wars movie? I mean, I get that the Royals have lots of important things going on and are detached from reality, but Star Wars was kind of a big deal back then.

It’s possible he was trying to crack a joke, and Portman didn’t get it because she was so nervous or maybe because Charles has the charisma of a dead pigeon. If it was a joke to ask her if she in the original Star Wars, then that would’ve actually been quite funny.

I mean, he was in his twenties when it came out, so surely he wasn’t yet busy enough to have watched Star Wars, or at least been aware of it when it came out? I guess we’ll never know…
