We’re a couple of months into this whole Coronavirus pandemic and even though there is an abundance of information out there about what’s going on, people are still ignoring it and coming up with complete and utter bullshit like the woman in this post.

I doubt stupid people in positions of power in the US – which there seem to be a lot of out there – are helped in their stance on Coronavirus by Donald Trump constantly referring to it as ‘The Chinese Virus’, but even so you would expect better than what the drivel that the chairman of the Riley County Commissioners came out with yesterday. Here’s what Republican Marvin Rodriguez had to say about it to the Kansas City Star:

I’m paraphrasing, but he said we don’t have a problem here because Italy has a lot of Chinese people, and we don’t have that problem here.

Italy has a problem with its health department, first. It’s health for everybody.

I have a friend in the Navy, and he said in that area of Northern Italy where that country’s first cases were reported, there’s a garment industry and a lot of Chinese.

If we were like Italy, we’d have it already.

Well, they say it came out of China and I’m not putting it past the Chinese government in communist China.

Normally, this kind of thing spreads slowly so I put two and two together.

I’ve been around a long time, girl.

Ugh. It’s so depressing when you hear people in actual elected positions of power come out with such flagrant xenophobia (and the casual sexism at the end, but that’s kind of a given for a guy walking around in a cowboy hat), but unfortunately that is a characteristic of the midwest United States and we’e probably going to be hearing a lot more of it in the coming weeks. It’s also almost certainly going to lead to way more people dying that could be saved. Fantastic work Trump and the boys.

For more of the same, check out this Florida politician saying that you can kill Coronavirus with a blowdryer. That’s not going to work.
