Ever since the conclusion of his trial with Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has been touring the UK with Jeff Beck and playing a couple of songs every night, as well as hanging out in really dumb places and being really nice to everyone, thus confirming his status as a ‘real man of the people’.

The latest stop on his victory tour was a Birmingham curry house called Varanasi on Sunday evening. Depp arrived with Beck and twenty members of their entourage where they proceeded to eat butter chicken, paneer tikka masala, lamb karahi, king prawn bhuna and an abundance of rice, popadoms and naans, as well as some cocktails and Rosé Champagne. The bill ended up being something like £50,000 – just a drop in the ocean for Depp, especially after he’s gonna receive another £10 million off Amber Heard after the result of the trial.

Here’s what Mohammed Hussain – the Operations Director of Varanasi – had to say about the visit:

We had a call out of the blue on Sunday afternoon saying that Johnny Depp wanted to come to eat with a group of people.

I was shocked and at first, I thought it might have been a wind up. But then his security team arrived, checked out the restaurant and we let them have the whole place because we were concerned that he might be bothered by other diners.

He was a very lovely, down to earth bloke who spent a lot of time speaking with the staff, our friends and family and was happy to pose for pictures with them. You would never have thought that he was such a big star. He had a lot of time for us all.

We had to promise that we would not reveal the final bill but let’s just put it this way; money was no issue, and it was easily in five figures. We made more money from Depp’s visit than we did from our busiest night of the week, which is a Saturday when we have around 400 diners.

In addition to the food, there was champagne, wine and all kinds of drinks being downed. Depp and his group had a great time. They loved the food, the ambience of the restaurant and the service that we provided. It was a real honour to have him here.

He clearly knows something about Indian food and enjoys it. We made sure not to make it too spicy so that Johnny Depp could enjoy the variety of flavours.

At one point, he said he wanted a little break from everybody and sat in my office, where he watched the people in his group on CCTV and asked me a lot of questions about it.

I didn’t ask him about Amber Heard or the court case. It was just a nice conversation with a very humble man. I’m still pinching myself because I never dreamt that Johnny Depp would be in my office having a chat about how the CCTV in the restaurant works.

That bit about pretending to care about how the CCTV works is just too much isn’t? it? Johnny Depp really is pulling off the performance of a lifetime and ticking all the boxes with his victory parade, just showing up everywhere and charming the pants off everyone.

You’ve really gotta hand it to him in that respect haven’t you? Whole world seems to be on his side now and it shows no sign of abating. Completely dominated the case and the narrative.

Wonder where he’ll show up tomorrow? A fish and chip shop in Liverpool? A pie and mash shop in the East End? Place your bets now.

For more of the same, check out Depp getting a standing ovation at the Royal Albert Hall when he showed up to play with Beck. Iconic.
